Charging Our Driverless Podcast on the Fancy Bus

Paris is usually lovely in spring time, but it's time for the bi-annual Paris auto show and there were some important and alluring vehicles unveiled, including the VW Golf (and GTI), the Jaguar F-type and the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo wagon concept.

Not the next Tesla Supercharger
Electric vehicles are becoming more important and prevalent, and now Tesla is offering a new charging system called Superchargers. One kind of vehicle that won't be charging there are Toyotas, which pulled the plug on its plan to build pure electrics to focus on hybrids.

Which is worse for air quality? Burgers or trucks. The answer may surprise you.

Speaking of surprises: Buses are going upscale in some cities.

Next thing they will have are driverless cars. Or fonts that you can actually read. Or kids developing apps.

Finally, Carmageddon II is coming in the land of sequels and it might be worse than the original.

This Is a Safelier, 5-Star Podcast, Even With the New Ratings

The U.S. government is taking steps to make cars safer, and the 5-star ratings that so many vehicles have been getting. The U.S. Transportation Department on Tuesday formally launched a more rigorous system for grading car safety. The new system for the first time gives vehicles one overall safety rating, as well as various subratings, with one star for the worst and five stars for the best.

Hopefully, drunk drivers will be safer as well, even in the 20 cities where there are more convictions for DUI offenses.

One more safety update: Toyota announced it has resolved issues with over five million vehicles involved in the three main recalls of the company's products this year.

Car sales were safely above last year's numbers in September. It wasn't a surprise that the weak numbers from the Cash for Clunkers hangover provided a positive comparison. Lexus isn't getting a good comparison in the luxury sales race, with Mercedes-Benz taking the lead for now. Perhaps Mercedes is benefiting from all of the older people -- over 50 years old -- that make up the large majority (more than 60%) of car buyers in the U.S.

Mathew isn't that old, but he did join the car buying elite recently when he said goodbye to the Vibe. More on his new wheels to come.

He got such a good deal, there might be a chance he can also afford one of the electric scooters that BMW's Mini and Daimler's Smart showed at the Paris auto show.

But he probably won't be able to afford the airfare to Abu Dhabi for the opening of Ferrari World later this month.

Everything Fits Better in a Hatchback, Especially This Podcast

Baby come back. Hatchback that is. According to Ford, 60% of the first Fiesta buyers are choosing hatchbacks. While the small-car segment has always been a haven for three- and five-door designs, it's surprising to see such a strong preference for hatchbacks, particularly with a vehicle Joe White says represents the future of the American car.

Ford is benefiting from the strong buzz and sales of its new designs and says it expects a strong profit this year.

In France, small cars rule the roads, but at the Paris Auto Show this week there will be some dramatic and large models getting shown off. Among them a redesigned Bentley, VW's revamped Passat and a radical Lamborghini concept.

NHTSA and Ray LaHood claimed this week that 72,000 lives over the last years. A huge number. Some of that might be attributed to safety features trickling down from the luxury segment to more pedestrian vehicles like Chevrolet's.

Speaking of pedestrians, Volvo had a little oops when showing off its new pedestrian-avoidance system. Just be thankful your not Bob the dummy.

Another dummy? A Maryland judge corrected a ruling that the stock taillights on a Pontiac G8 were illegal.
